MEXT Scholarship
This scholarship program is offered by the government of Japan (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology: MEXT) to international students conducting research at Japanese universities as either regular or non-regular students.
Hiroshima University accepts MEXT scholarship students with the following statuses:
(1) Graduate School Level: Research Students
( A: Embassy Recommendation / B: University Recommendation)
・Those who are enrolled as regular students in a master’s course, doctoral course, or professional degree course at a graduate school.
・Those who conduct research in specialized fields as non-regular students at graduate schools or institutes attached to the university with the aim of advancing to a degree program, and those who receive preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to such research.
(2) Undergraduate Level: Bachelor Students
( A: Embassy Recommendation / B: University Recommendation)
Those who are enrolled in an undergraduate course at the university, or who receive preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects prior to placement in an undergraduate course at the university.

How to Apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship
There are two ways to apply for the Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship.

A: Embassy Recommendation
【Research Students (1), Undergraduate Students (2) 】
Selection and application procedures for the MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation) are conducted through Japanese embassies and consulates (hereinafter referred to as “Japanese diplomatic missions”) in each country.
To become a candidate for the MEXT Scholarship (Embassy Recommendation), applicants must pass the first screening conducted by the Japanese diplomatic mission.
Application and selection schedules at Japanese diplomatic missions vary by country. Please check the website of the respective diplomatic mission.
Applicants who have successfully passed the first screening at Japanese diplomatic missions and wish to enroll at Hiroshima University are required to obtain a Letter of Provisional Acceptance from the university.
If you have passed the first screening, please follow the instructions below and contact the designated office.

B-Ⅰ: University Recommendation (Special Selection)
【Graduate Level: Research Students (1) 】
University selection will be conducted for students whose research field coincides with programs selected for the “Special Program that conducts priority placements for MEXT scholarship students” (hereinafter referred to as an “adopted program” ※1).
After internal selection at the university, candidates are recommended to MEXT, which then determines the successful candidates.
The candidates will be selected based on factors such as performance in inter-university exchanges.
Compared to embassy recommendations, the number of successful candidates through university recommendations is smaller, and depending on the research field, there may be no recommendation slots available.
Note: We do not accept direct applications or inquiries from prospective international students themselves. (Prior approval and recommendation by an academic advisor of the university is required to apply.)

The candidates will be selected based on factors such as performance in inter-university exchanges.
This applies to individuals newly coming from overseas to study in Japan, including working professionals.
The number of students our university can recommend to MEXT is three, which is extremely limited.

B-Ⅱ: University Recommendation (Japanese Studies Students)
